National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition
In 2022, National Geographic Society with the support of Rolex, launched the Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition, a one-of-a-kind science and storytelling exploration of the world’s most vital freshwater ecosystem — the Amazon River basin. From its “flying rivers” to its flowing streams and flooded forests, the basin’s flood pulse is the life-blood that sustains the Amazon ecosystem and the 40 million people who depend on it. Led by a cohort of 17 National Geographic Explorers, multidisciplinary teams are conducting groundbreaking research across boundaries with local scientists, communities, and policy-makers to develop innovative, community-driven, and scalable solutions to ensure the protection, restoration, revival and survival of this vital ecosystem.
